Career

In the club

Tonelli's career began in 2000 in the youth team of FC Empoli , which he went through until the end of his junior years in 2010. For the 2010/11 season he was included in the Empolis squad. He played his first game for the pros on September 5, 2010 in Serie B in a 0-0 draw against AS Varese in 1910 . In his debut season Tonelli came on 16 appearances in the league and one in the Coppa Italia . In the following season , in which Empoli only achieved relegation in the relegation games, he played again 16 league games and three cup games. In the 2012/13 season Tonelli made the leap to a regular player under the new coach Maurizio Sarri and completed 40 of 42 league games. The club reached the promotion play-offs in fourth , but failed at AS Livorno . The promotion to Serie A succeeded Tonelli and the team a year later, when they could finish the 2013/14 season in second place behind champions US Palermo .

Tonelli played his first Serie A game on August 31, 2014 in the 2-0 defeat by Udinese Calcio . Empoli was able to finish the 2014/15 season in 15th place and thus secured relegation, to which Tonelli had five goals in 28 games. Although successful coach Maurizio Sarri left the club and moved to SSC Napoli , the team was able to further establish itself in Serie A in the following year . Under Sarri's successor Marco Giampaolo they reached tenth place in the table. Tonelli played 26 games and scored two goals.

In May 2016, Maurizio Sarri piloted his former protégé Tonelli to SSC Napoli, who signed a four-year contract with the Partenopei on July 1 and costs around ten million euros.

In the national team

Tonelli played three games for the Italian U-16 national team in 2006. Four years later he came under Ciro Ferrara to an assignment for the U-21 national team : In the friendly against Turkey on November 17, 2010, he was substituted for Giulio Donati .

In May 2016, national coach Antonio Conte Tonelli appointed to the squad for the first training camp that the national team served in preparation for the European Championship in France . However, he was not appointed to the 30-strong provisional squad and has not been considered since then. In October 2018 Tonelli was nominated again by Roberto Mancini , but remained without commitment. Since then it has not been taken into account.
