The Resolution 1690 of the UN Security Council is a resolution on the situation in East Timor , Recalling the resolutions 1599 and 1677 , which the United Nations Security Council has adopted unanimously at its 5469th meeting on 20 June of 2006. The United Nations thus decided to extend the mandate of the United Nations Office in East Timor (UNOTIL) by two months.

background

After the Indonesian occupation, East Timor was under UN administration from 1999. After East Timor was granted independence, the UN support mission remained. It was originally supposed to end in 2006, but unrest broke out in the spring of 2006 .

The resolution

The Security Council expresses concern at the unpredictable situation in East Timor and the grave consequences for the people. The ongoing acts of violence against the population and the destruction of property are condemned.

The Council decides to extend the mandate of the United Nations Office in East Timor (UNOTIL) by two months until August 20, 2006, with a view to planning the role of the UN in the period thereafter. The Council commends and supports the deployment of the international security forces of the governments of Portugal , Australia , New Zealand and Malaysia at the request of the East Timorese government.

All parties in East Timor are called upon to renounce violence and take part in the democratic process.

consequences

The International Stabilization Force (ISF) succeeded in restoring peace and order in the course of the year. With Resolution 1704 , UNOTIL was replaced by UNMIT . The work of ISF and UNMIT ended in 2012 after the upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections .
