UN Security Council resolution 1720

The Resolution 1720 of the UN Security Council is a resolution with which the Security Council of the United Nations to bring about continuing his efforts in the area of Western Sahara, a referendum and a lasting political solution. The Security Council relied on its previous resolutions on this issue, including resolutions 1495 , 1541 and 1675 . The resolution was passed unanimously at the 5560th session.

The resolution calls on the member states of the United Nations to provide funds to reunite families separated by the clashes between Morocco and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Saguia el-Hamra and Rio de Oro ( POLISARIO ). The resolution also calls on both parties to the conflict to use the next six months to end the fifteen-year stalemate and restart negotiations. During the meeting, however, the US envoy asked the Secretary-General to prepare for the dissolution of this mission in the event that Mission des Nations Unies pour l'organ d'un référendum au Sahara occidental (MINURSO) remained unsuccessful.

The resolution extended MINURSO's mandate until April 30, 2007, and requested the Secretary General to report before the mandate expired. The resolution was adopted unanimously on October 31, 2006 during the 5560th session of the Security Council.
