from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Resolution 1691 of the UN Security Council is a resolution to accommodate the Republic of Montenegro to the United Nations that the United Nations Security Council has adopted unanimously at its 5473rd meeting on 22 June of 2006.

With the resolution, the Security Council proposed to the General Assembly of the United Nations that Montenegro be accepted as a member of the United Nations.

After Montenegro declared independence on June 3, 2006, Serbia was the legal successor to Serbia and Montenegro under international law and therefore retained its membership in the United Nations. As a result, Montenegro submitted an application for membership on June 5, 2006, which undertook to accept and respect the principles of the Charter of the United Nations and to comply with the rules laid down therein. The General Assembly approved the admission of Montenegro on June 28, 2006, making Montenegro the 192nd member state of the United Nations.
