The Resolution 1736 of the UN Security Council is a resolution on the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo , which the United Nations Security Council has adopted unanimously at its 5610th meeting on 22 December of 2006.

In previous resolutions, the Security Council had authorized the Secretary General of the United Nations to send troop contingents from MONUC ( Mission de l'Organisation des Nations Unies en République Démocratique du Congo ), ONUB ( Opération des Nations Unies au Burundi ) and UNMIL ( United Nations Mission in Liberia ) regroup as needed. The resolution changed the mandate of MONUC for the period from January 1, 2006 to February 15, 2007. Since ONUB's mandate expired on December 31, 2006, the Security Council decided under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations to relocate the ONUB contingents that were involved in MONUC to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and make MONUC subordinate to them . The measure, which affected an infantry battalion and a military hospital, increased the strength of MONUC by up to 916 soldiers.

At the same time, the panel decided to return to their home countries by the end of 2006 fifty ONUB military observers who had participated in the observation of the elections in the Democratic Republic of the Congo on the basis of UN resolutions 1669 and 1692 and condemned the continuation of the violent attacks between armed groups and Militias in the east of the country and the danger they posed to the civilian population .

The Security Council relied on its previous decisions and the declarations of its President on the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi and the African Great Lakes region and decided on the recommendation of the UN Secretary-General of November 15, 2006 (document S / 2006/892) and also took into account the new Congolese government in its decision-making. In doing so, he expressed his determination to take a decision before that date on the Secretary-General's proposals regarding the continuation of the mandate beyond February 15.
