Markus Kissling (* 1959 in Wolfwil , Switzerland ) is a Swiss actor , artist, and cultural and social entrepreneur.

Life

After training as an actor at the University of the Arts in Bern , Kissling played in theaters and in German and international film and television productions.

In the early 1990s, Kissling turned its back on traditional forms of municipal theater. Under the name “Einhorn” (later Einhorn / Jednorozec) he realized three participatory theater works. Mostly lay people developed interdisciplinary and participatory theater spectacles with the character of a total work of art together with professional artists from different countries over long periods of time. The presidents Richard von Weizsäcker and Roman Herzog in Germany and Václav Havel in the Czech Republic expressed their positive opinion on the results.

Building on the experience and the workforce of these projects, Kissling founded “SPACEWALK” in 1998, a mixture of social enterprises and an interdisciplinary collective of artists, scientists and educators. Using creative and artistic techniques, solutions were developed for training unemployed young people in Zurich or for urban development in socially disadvantaged areas or regions that have suffered from a massive population decline ("ways to the center" in Wolfsburg-Westhagen, "Forster Tuch").

Since 2006, Kissling has been increasingly incorporating new media into its work. He gives lectures and teaches on the subjects of citizen participation , socioculture , and creativity in Germany and Switzerland.

In his work and development, Kissling refers from a theoretical approach to Joseph Beuys (“Everyone is an artist”) and his concept of social sculpture as well as to the representatives of socioculture Hermann Glaser and Hilmar Hoffmann (culture for everyone), as well as to game theory by Friedrich von Schiller .

What all projects have in common is the participatory character. Every citizen is invited to take part in them. Each of them seeks a socially measurable benefit and effect. In this they can be compared to works by The Living Theater , by Augusto Boal or by Christoph Schlingensief .
