In the resolution, the UN Security Council declares that it has examined the application of the Democratic Republic of East Timor (Timor-Leste) for membership in the United Nations (S / 2002/558) and recommends that the General Assembly of the United Nations approve the application.

On September 27, 2002, the General Assembly accepted East Timor as the 191st member state of the United Nations.
