Elkan Naumburg

Elkan Naumburg (born January 1, 1835 in Treuchtlingen , † July 31, 1924 in New York City ) was a German banker and philanthropist who immigrated to the United States .

Life

Elkan Naumburg grew up as the son of a chasan in Treuchtlingen. At the age of 15, he emigrated to Baltimore , USA with his brother's family . There Naumburg founded a textile company. In 1893 he founded the E. Naumburg & Co. banking house in New York , a competing company with Goldman Sachs , which made Naumburg rich. Naumburg financed a concert pavilion in Central Park , which is why the jazz song On the mall was dedicated to him. Naumburg also financed the first kindergarten in his hometown Treuchtlingen and regularly donated large sums, which is why he was made an honorary citizen of the city. Furthermore, a street in Treuchtlingen is named after Naumburg.
