The Resolution 1264 of the UN Security Council is a resolution on the situation in East Timor that the United Nations Security Council has adopted unanimously at its 4045th meeting, on 15 September 1999th

In adopting the resolution, the Security Council referred to its previous decisions on East Timor, including resolutions 384 (1975) of December 22, 1975, 389 (1976) of April 22, 1976, 1236 (1999) of May 7, 1999, 1246 (1999) of June 11, 1999 and 1262 (1999) of August 27, 1999.

With the resolution, the Security Council responded to the referendum in East Timor on August 30, 1999 and the subsequent violence by pro-Indonesian militias . Around 2000 people were murdered, three quarters of the population had fled. In a referendum, the East Timorese voted for the full independence of their country, which had been occupied by Indonesia since 1975 . The Security Council expressed concern about the deteriorating security situation and the displacement and relocation of Timorese civilians, as well as attacks on the staff and premises of the United Nations Mission in East Timor (UNAMET) and on humanitarian personnel.

Under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations and with due respect for Indonesia's sovereignty, the Security Council condemned acts of violence in East Timor and demanded that they cease and that those responsible be punished. He called for all sides in East Timor to work with humanitarian organizations to ensure the protection of vulnerable civilians , the safe return of refugees and displaced persons and the provision of humanitarian aid. For this purpose he also approved the dispatch of a force, as requested in the letter from the Government of Indonesia of September 12, 1999 to the Secretary General of the United Nations . The mandate of the multinational force included restoring peace and security in East Timor and protecting UNAMET, as well as facilitating humanitarian aid. The participating states were authorized by the resolution to use all means necessary to fulfill this mandate.

With the resolution, the body underlined Indonesia's responsibility for the transition phase between the conclusion of the referendum and the start of the implementation of its result for the maintenance of peace and security in East Timor and that Indonesia also ensure the safe return of the refugees after the agreement of May 5, 1999 to East Timor.

The Security Council entrusted the Secretary General with the task of planning and preparing an interim administration for the United Nations in East Timor. The leadership of the peacekeeping force was asked to report regularly to the panel on progress in implementing the mandate.

On the basis of the resolution, the International Armed Forces East Timor INTERFET was sent to East Timor. The first Australian units landed at Dili airport on September 20, 1999. The United Nations Interim Administration for East Timor, UNTAET , began its work on October 25, 1999, based on Resolution 1272 (1999) .
