History and description

The choir was founded in 1945 by the then Stadtkantor Gustav Sasse , from 1967 to 1986 it was under the direction of Manfred Brandstetter. Today he regularly performs great works of church music under the direction of Jörg Straube . Well-known soloists are also involved, for example Thomas Quasthoff made his early solo appearances with this choir. The choir is accompanied by the Hanover Bach Orchestra, which is composed of Hanoverian musicians according to the requirements of the pieces. Partner at the organ is the organist of the Marktkirche Ulfert Smidt.

The repertoire of the choir is not limited to the choral works of its namesake Johann Sebastian Bach , but includes all church music from the 17th century. A Passion is regularly performed during Holy Week , a Requiem around the Day of Repentance and Prayer, and the Christmas Oratorio during Advent . There is also an a cappella concert in summer. In addition, the choir sings regularly in the market church service.

The choir regularly goes on concert tours in Germany and abroad. In 1998 he won a 3rd prize at the German Choir Competition in Regensburg .
