General view with pond and waterfall

The Luisenthaler waterfall ( both spellings - with and without "h" - appear equally ) is an artificial waterfall in Thuringia ( Germany ).

The park around Altenstein Castle in today's Wartburg district , created on the initiative of Duke Georg I of Saxony-Meiningen , was to be enriched by a waterfall with a sight that would correspond to the prevailing romantic taste of the 19th century. Miners entrusted with the construction used an existing source stream (Luisenbach) in the Luisenthaler Grund and added a collecting pond in its upper course, which should serve as a reservoir for the water supply of the waterfall. The waterfall itself is located in the lower part of the valley floor and was connected to the reservoir via an inconspicuous moat. The draining water was caught in a carp pond immediately below and drained to the Schweina via the natural stream .

Especially on hot summer days, the waterfall was a popular destination for the court society, who stayed with the ducal family in the Altenstein summer residence.
