The J.League Division 1 1999 was the seventh season of the highest division of the Japanese J.League and the first under the name Division 1 . Sixteen clubs took part in it. The regular season was held in two half-series and began on March 6, 1999. After the end of the second half-series on November 27, 1999, the winners of the two half-series, Júbilo Iwata and Shimizu S-Pulse , played in two games for the Japanese championship. These finals were played after the regular season on December 4th and 11th. Both games were won 2-1 by the home club, so a penalty shoot-out had to decide the title. Here Júbilo Iwata just got the upper hand, for the team it was the second league title overall.

Relegated to the J.League Division 2 2000 were Urawa Red Diamonds and Bellmare Hiratsuka .

mode

As in the previous season , the clubs faced each other twice, once at home and once away, but both half-series were counted as separate championships. If there was a tie after 90 minutes, the playing time was extended by two fifteen minutes, whereby the golden goal rule was applied. If it was still a draw after that, the game was counted as such; this was a novelty, because a game that was drawn after 120 minutes always ended with a penalty shoot-out .

There were three points for a win after regular time and two points for a win in extra time; in the event of a tie there was a counter for each team. The table for each semi-series was created according to the following criteria:

  1. Number of points scored
  2. Goal difference
  3. Goals scored
  4. Results of the games among themselves
  5. Decision game or coin toss

After the end of a half series, the club qualified with the most points for the finals of the Japanese championship. The winner of the finals qualified as Japanese champion for the Asian Club Championship 2000/01 . The determination of two permanent relegated teams to Division 2 was newly introduced. For this purpose, a table was formed over the entire season after the end of the season according to the same criteria as stated above, and the two worst teams had to go into the second division.

Due to the introduction of the second division and the associated reduction to sixteen participants, the number of games to be completed per team was reduced; instead of 34 only 30 games were to be played.

Attendees

A total of sixteen teams took part in the season. Due to the establishment of the J.League Division 2 there was no promoted player from the Japan Football League in the previous year , although Kawasaki Frontale, the runner-up, took part in the relegation playoffs; the team failed in a qualifying game at Avispa Fukuoka . Avispa only secured relegation in the playoff finals. Last year's climber Consadole Sapporo , who was passed back directly to the second division, suffered more.

Another team was eliminated from the league by merging with a competitor. After the Yokohama Wing got into financial difficulties due to the exit of one of the main sponsors, team owner All Nippon Airways had no choice but to start negotiations with Nissan , owner of city rival Marinos , to merge the two clubs in order to save the wings from bankruptcy. The merger was completed in early 1999, the team now played under the name Yokohama F. Marinos .

Suntory Championship

The rule that a game could not end in a draw after 90 minutes also applied to the finals. This led to the unusual situation for European standards that both games went into overtime. Ultimately, however, a penalty shoot-out decided in favor of Júbilo Iwata.
