Career

society

Matsuda was trained in football at Maebashi Ikuei High School before he was accepted into the professional squad of the Yokohama F. Marinos in 1995. Since then he has developed into one of the association's identifying figures. His greatest successes include winning the J. League in 1995, 2003 and 2004, as well as the 2001 National Cup . In 2000 and 2002, he was also voted into the Best Eleven , a selection of the best players from a previous season. Matsuda is a regular member of his club's permanent staff and, apart from 1998 and 2007, always played twenty-five or more competitive games for the Marinos. In the meantime he also rose to become the team captain of his team. In total, Matsuda played 385 times for the Yokohama F. Marinos in 15 years.

On August 2, 2011, Matsuda collapsed while exercising and was hospitalized unconscious. Two days later he died of a heart attack.

With almost 500 competitive games for Yokohama F. Marinos, Matsuda set the club record and is well ahead of Yoshiharu Ueno (393 games) and Norio Omura (311 games), who follow in second and third place. (As of December 2009)

National team

Matsuda first represented the colors of the Japanese national team at the 1996 Summer Olympics . Before that, he played for the junior teams in his home country. In 1993 he was in the squad at the U-17 World Cup , where he came to four missions. In 1995, the defensive player played with the U-20s at the World Cup in Qatar . Four years later he received his first appointment for the senior national team and played with them at the 2000 Asian Cup in Lebanon. There he was used in three games. The defender made his Asian Cup debut on October 14, 2000 in a 4-1 win over Saudi Arabia . Nevertheless, he had to vacate his place for the next two group matches and the quarter-finals. Only in the semifinals and finally in the final for the title Matsuda was back in action. The final, again against Saudi Arabia, won the Japanese 1-0, so that the defensive player could celebrate his first major success in the national jersey. The following year, Matsuda was part of coach Philippe Troussier's squad at the 2001 Confederations Cup . Japan made it to the final here too. Matsuda, with four appearances out of a possible five, was in the star formation of his association in the 1-0 final defeat against France and completed the full playing time. The defender was again Troussier in 2002 appointed to attend the World Cup at home to participate. Together with Tsuneyasu Miyamoto and Kōji Nakata , Matsuda formed the defensive of his team. After having mastered the preliminary round as group winners, the team failed at the later third-placed Turkey with 0: 1 in the round of 16. Matsuda was the only player next to Koji Nakata and Seigō Narazaki who did not miss a minute of his team at the World Cup. Two years later, the defender was again part of the Asian Cup squad . The team managed to defend its title in China. Matsuda only came on in the quarterfinals against Jordan when he was substituted on for Makoto Tanaka in extra time in the 115th minute . Since 2005 Matsuda has not been considered for the national team. In 2000, 2001 and 2002 he played with Japan in the competition for the Kirin Cup , which was won in 2000 and 2001.
