Alessandro Santos ( Japanese 三 都 主 ア レ サ ン ド ロ Santosu Aresandoro ; born July 20, 1977 in Maringá , Paraná , Brazil ), player name Alex , is a Japanese football player with Brazilian roots.

Career

The native Brazilian came to Japan in 1994 at the age of 17. He played on the school team at Meitokugijuku High School from 1994 to 1997 . Before that he played eight years in the youth team of Gremio Maringa, a club from his former homeland Brazil. In 1997 he signed his first professional contract with Shimizu S-Pulse, an association based in Shimizu . During his time at S-Pulse, he was named Player of the Year in Japan in 1999 and became a Japanese citizen in 2001. There were only eight months between application and delivery. The left wing player made his first game for the Japanese national soccer team on March 21, 2002 in a friendly international match against Ukraine . He scored his first goal on May 2, 2002 against Honduras . Alex was only the second foreign-born player from Japan to wear the blue “samurai” jersey. In August 2002, the Brazilian-Japanese negotiated with the English Premier League club Charlton Athletic . The trial broke down as the left-footed man was not given a work permit for the UK . In January 2004 he moved to the Urawa Red Diamonds . Until Ivica Osim took office as coach of the Japanese national soccer team , Alex belonged to the tribe of Japan. Since the Bosnian head coach has been in the land of the rising sun , he has rarely been a part of the selection. On December 12, 2006, he was loaned by the Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg for one year with an option to buy from the Diamonds.

In early 2013 it was announced that Alex was moving to J. League Division 2 to Tochigi SC .

In February 2015 Alex returned to his native Brazil for the Maringá Futebol Clube .

National team

Alex played 82 times for Japan and scored seven goals. He took part in the World Cup finals in 2002 in his own country and in 2006 in Germany . He also won the Asian Cup with Japan in 2004 .
