Ahn Jung-hwan (born January 27, 1976 in Paju , Gyeonggi-do ) is a former South Korean football player . He held the position of striker and retired in January 2012.
Career history
Ahn began his professional career in the South Korean professional league K League , where he signed his first contract with the Daewoo Royals (now Busan IPark ) in 1998 .
He made headlines around the world when he scored the golden goal against Italy in the second round of the 2002 World Cup and paved South Korea's entry into the quarter-finals.
At that time he was under contract with the Seria-A-Club Perugia and angered his club president Luciano Gaucci with his header against the then three-time world champion Italy so that he was quoted in the Italian sports newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport as follows: "I will not do that Paying the salary of a player who ruined Italian football. ”Although Perugia later withdrew this statement, Ahn's Italy was over.
After the 2002 World Cup in his own country, Ahn Jung-hwan tried to find a new club within Europe. But all efforts failed because of Perugia's transfer demands, so he returned to Asia, where he signed with Shimizu S-Pulse in Japan. Just one season later, Ahn moved to league rivals Yokohama F Marinos. Despite having a reputation for injury prone in Japan, he scored 30 goals in 72 J-League games.
In the summer of 2005, Ahn returned to Europe by hiring the French first division club FC Metz . On January 24, 2006, MSV Duisburg announced Ahn's commitment. Although he was still the dream player of the then coach Jürgen Kohler , Ahn did not find a real kick in the team, so that his contract was terminated on August 31, 2006 by MSV Duisburg with immediate effect. Ahn had signed a contract with Suwon Samsung Bluewings and was back playing at home.
At the 2006 World Cup in Germany , South Korea's selection was eliminated after the group stage. Ahn had scored a total of one goal in three games as a substitute.
In January 2012, Ahn announced the end of his career.
