Adrian Mihai Popescu (born July 26, 1960 in Craiova , Dolj district ) is a former Romanian football player and current coach . He completed a total of 301 games in the top Romanian division, Divizia A , and took part in the 1990 World Cup.

Career as a player

Adrian Popescu started his career at Universitatea Craiova . On March 14, 1981, he completed his first use in the highest Romanian football league, the Divizia A . In the 1983/84 season Popescu was a regular player. He remained loyal to Uni Craiova until 1992, during which time he won the Romanian championship twice and the Romanian cup twice. 1992 was his career a bend when he decided to move abroad and the Swiss club FC Locarno joined, in the second division, the National League B played. Despite ambitions, the club was denied promotion to the National League A. Popescu then returned to Romania and Uni Craiova in 1995, but could no longer build on previous performances, so that he initially joined local rivals Electroputere Craiova in Divizia B during the 1995/96 winter break , and later at the beginning of the 1996/97 season moved to the lower class Constructorul Craiova . 1998 signed with Politehnica Iasi in Divizia B, before he ended his career after the first half of the 1998/99 season at the age of 38.

Career as a coach

Adrian Popescu was the coach of the first category and vice-president of the football school Școala de fotbal Gică Popescu Craiova , which had been founded by his former teammate Gheorghe Popescu in Craiova . There he looked after the team that played in League IV until their suspension in March 2010 . On May 11, 2012, Sorin Cârțu brought him as the successor to Mircea Irimescu, who had failed with a myocardial infarction, as head coach of the second division club Alro Slatina . Since the promotion to League 1 was missed in the 2011/12 season and Alro then merged with local rivals FC Olt Slatina , Popescu and Cârțu had to leave the club in July 2012.

On April 22, 2013 he was obliged together with Mircea Irimescu as assistant coach of Sorin Cârțu at relegation-threatened first division club CSMS Iași . The coaching team could not ensure relegation and was released in early June 2013.

National team

Adrian Popescu played a total of seven international matches for the Romanian national soccer team . He made his debut on May 21, 1990 against Egypt as part of the preparation for the 1990 World Cup in Italy, for which he had been nominated by national coach Emerich Jenei . But he was not used. It is interesting that he played three of his seven international matches against Egypt.
