Emil Săndoi (born March 1, 1965 in Craiova ) is a former Romanian football player and current coach . As a player, he played a total of 350 games in the highest Romanian football league, Divizia A , and took part in the 1990 World Cup.

Player career

Emil Săndoi began his career with his hometown club Universitatea Craiova . On September 17, 1983 he came to his first competitive game against FC Argeş Piteşti . Săndoi spent his most successful years at Universitatea Craiova, where he won the Romanian Championship in 1991 and the Romanian Cup in 1991 and 1993. In the final of the Cupa României 1992/93 he broke his leg shortly before the end of the game after a collision with his opponent Marin Petrache . Because of this protracted injury, Săndoi was not used for a season, but found it back to old strength. Săndoi remained loyal to Universitatea Craiova for a total of 12 seasons before moving to France in 1995 to SCO Angers in Division 2 . This company was not crowned with success, however, as Angers was relegated to the National (D3) . Săndoi then returned to Romania and joined FC Argeş Piteşti. After good performance, the winter break 1997/98 offered the opportunity to play again for Universitatea Craiova. There Săndoi ended his active career in 1999.

National team

Săndoi played a total of 30 games for the Romanian national football team . He played his first international match on October 7, 1987 against Greece . In 1990 national coach Emerich Jenei called him into the squad for the 1990 World Cup in Italy, where he was used in the first game against the Soviet Union . In 1993 he completed his last international match.

Coaching career

After Săndoi had already worked as an assistant coach at Universitatea Craiova in his last active season , he became head coach the following season. After he had saved the team in the 1999/2000 season from relegation and reached the final of the Romanian Cup with her , Săndoi rose in 2000 to the club's vice-president. In 2001 there was the opportunity to take over the team from Pandurii Târgu Jiu , who was then playing in Divizia B. In the 2001/02 season Săndoi Târgu Jiu turned his back to take over Universitatea Craiova again. In 2003 Săndoi moved again to Târgu Jiu, where he rose to Divizia A in 2005 for the first time in the club's history . After the club started with four losses in the 2005/06 season , he was sacked in late August and replaced by Viorel Hizo . Then Săndoi moved to the Romanian Football Association and initially took over their U-17 , later the U-21 . In between, he was the end of the 2007/08 season for eight games coach of the first division club FC Vaslui after the latter had separated from Dorinel Munteanu . On August 19, 2013 Săndoi resigned as coach of the Romanian U-21 national team and was replaced by Bogdan Stelea .

In early September 2014, Săndoi succeeded Ionel Gane as head coach of first division club CS Universitatea Craiova . He was released in January 2016. At the beginning of the 2016/17 season he took over CS Concordia Chiajna . At the end of October 2016 he had to take his hat off there. Since January 2018 he has been coaching FC Argeş Piteşti in Liga II.
