Ionel Tersinio "Jerry" Gane (born October 12, 1971 in Drănic , Dolj County ) is a former Romanian football player and today's coach . As a striker , he played 325 games in the Romanian Liga 1 and the Swiss National League A .
Career as a player
The career of Ionel Gane began in the 1988/89 season at his hometown club Universitatea Craiova , when he came on December 7, 1988 in the game against SC Bacău for his first use in Divizia A (now League 1 ). For the time being, it was his last game for Uni Craiova, because in 1990 Gane moved to local rivals Electroputere Craiova in Divizia B (now Liga II ) to gain match practice. At Electroputere, he played a major role as a regular player in the most successful phase of the club, when after the rise in 1991, third place jumped out in the 1991/92 season and the club was able to qualify for participation in the UEFA Cup .
After this success, Gane returned to Universitatea Craiova , where he could also fight for a regular place in the first team as a strike partner of Gheorghe Craioveanu . After winning the Cup in 1993 , he was able to win the runner- up with the club in the 1993/94 and 1994/95 seasons behind Steaua Bucharest . After a fourth place in the 1995/96 season , he left the club in the summer of 1996 and moved to Spain to CA Osasuna , who was playing in the Segunda División at the time . With Osasuna he was able to avoid relegation twice, but did not get the chance as expected. After he was hardly used in the 1997/98 season, Gane returned to Romania in the summer of 1998 and joined Dinamo Bucharest . Here he found a goal threat again and was runner-up behind Rapid Bucharest with the club at the end of the season , but was only used in half of the games.
After just one year, Gane moved to Switzerland for FC St. Gallen in the summer of 1999 . This change turned out to be a stroke of luck for him. After the club had always fought to stay in the league in previous years, it was surprisingly champion under coach Marcel Koller in the 1999/2000 season and only missed defending its title in the following season on the last day of the game. Gane was involved in these successes as a regular player from the start. In the following years, St. Gallen was unable to build on its successes. After relegation had only been secured in the relegation round in the 2002/03 season , Gane moved to the reigning champions Grasshopper Club Zurich . There he was able to score 16 goals in the 2003/04 season , but the club finished in a disappointing seventh place.
Gane returned to Universitatea Craiova after the season , but moved to Tianjin Teda in China in the fall of 2004 . In the winter break of 2004/05 he returned to Romania and joined Rapid Bucharest . Here he hardly got a chance, so at the end of the season he moved to VfL Bochum , who played in the 2nd Bundesliga at the time . After only one use, he went back to Uni Craiova during the winter break, but moved to FC Argeş Piteşti in the summer of 2006 , where he ended his career at the end of the year.
National team
Ionel Gane played six games for the Romanian national football team . He made his debut on May 6, 1992 in the World Cup qualifier against the Faroe Islands , when he came on as a substitute for Marius Lăcătuș in the 7-0 win in the 63rd minute . The then national coach Cornel Dinu used Gane in the following games but only took him on a trip to America in early 2003, so that he came on February 10, 2003 against Mexico for the time being for his last appearance.
In April 2001 Gane came to his last international match in the friendly against Slovakia . He was used from the start, but did not convince national coach László Bölöni for further nominations.
Career as a coach
After the end of his active career, Gane worked as a trainer. In 2007 he became assistant coach to Nicolò Napoli at his former club Universitatea Craiova in Liga 1 . After he was released in May 2009, Gane became his successor on an interim basis, but could no longer achieve the desired qualification for the Europa League . At the beginning of the new season he was again assistant to Napoli at FC Brașov . On August 3, 2009 Gane replaced Cristea Boldici as head coach of Gaz Metan CFR Craiova in Liga II . In June 2011 his contract was not extended and instead Cosmin Bodea was hired as the new coach.
At the beginning of the 2012/13 season , Gane was assistant coach of CS Turnu Severin under Marian Bondrea in League 1. He also kept his post under his successor Nicolò Napoli. When Napoli was sacked in early 2013, Gane was his successor, but could not prevent relegation at the end of the season. In early September 2013, he replaced Nicolae Manea as head coach of first division promoted Corona Brașov . There he was released in April 2014 in view of the threat of relegation. In June 2014, he succeeded Gavril Balint as head coach of CSU Craiova . He had to give up this office again in early September 2014 and was replaced by Emil Săndoi when his club was bottom of the table.
In March 2016, he took over the relegation-threatened Petrolul Ploieşti , but could no longer avert the move to League II. In July 2016, Gane became head coach of CSM Râmnicu Vâlcea , but had to vacate his chair in December 2016.
