Nicolae Manea (* 11. March 1954 in Bucharest ; † 15. December 2014 ) was a Romanian football player and coach and official . In his active career, the striker played 209 games in Divizia A , the highest Romanian division. Since December 2013 he has been President of Rapid Bucharest .

Career as a player

After his training in the youth of Rapid Bucharest, he moved up in 1973 in the squad of the first team. There he made his debut in Divizia A on March 16, 1974 . At the end of the season, the team had to relegate to Divizia B , where they managed to get promoted again immediately. At the same time he was able to win the Romanian Cup with Rapid in 1975 . In the final against Universitatea Craiova , he scored both goals for his team in a 2-1 win.

After relegation in 1976 Manea had to relegate again with Rapid at the end of the 1976/77 season . In the following years he missed the return to the House of Lords with his team. In 1980 he finally left Rapid for local rivals Steaua Bucharest . There, however, he could not prevail and returned to Rapid after a year. In the 1982/83 season he was able to prevail with his club in Divizia B and rose to Divizia A. There he was able to place himself in the midfield of the league in the following years. Although he was used regularly, he hardly scored any goals as a striker.

In the summer of 1987 Manea left Rapid and moved to Gloria Bistrița in Divizia B. After three unsuccessful attempts, he returned with Gloria to the House of Lords in the summer of 1990. He was able to finish the 1990/91 season with the newcomer in fifth place, but was rarely used and ended his career in the summer of 1991.

National team

Nicolae Manea played his only game for the Romanian national team on July 2, 1976 in a friendly against Iran .

Career as a coach

After the end of his active career, Manea worked as a football coach. After four years as head coach of Unirea Dej in Divizia B , he took over FC Bihor Oradea in Divizia C in the summer of 1996 . He left the club in early April 1997 to take over his former club Rapid Bucharest in Divizia A as the successor to Ion Dumitru . The 1996/97 season he finished on a place in midfield and had to make way for Mircea Lucescu .

In the summer of 1998 Manea Mircea Nedelcu inherited from Ceahlăul Piatra Neamț . His tenure ended in early November 1998 after eight games without a win when he was replaced by Viorel Hizo . In March 1999 he took over Rapid Bucharest again when the club was in first place. When the club had fallen behind Dinamo Bucharest five game days later , Rapid parted ways with Manea and replaced him again with Mircea Lucescu, with whom the club finally secured the 1999 championship .

From 2002 to 2005 Manea was the coach of the Romanian U-21 national team , but missed qualifying for the European Championship during this time . In September 2005 he took over as successor to Gheorghe Mulţescu the descended straight into the Divizia B FC Brasov . At the end of the year he had to give way to Cornel Țălnar .

In late October 2009, Manea was a third time head coach of Rapid Bucharest when Viorel replaced Hizo. In March 2010 he had to leave the club again. Since October 2010 he has been the successor to Laurențiu Reghecampf coach of Gloria Bistrița , with whom he had to relegate to League II at the end of the 2010/11 season .
