Josef Zeman (born January 23, 1915 in Drunče , Austria-Hungary , † May 3, 1999 ) was a Czechoslovak football player and coach . With Czechoslovakia he took part in the 1938 World Cup in France .

Club career

Zeman started playing football at SK České Budějovice . In 1936 the striker moved to SK Pilsen, but the talent could not last long. After a few months, Zeman was signed by Sparta Prague . With Sparta, the attacker was twice national champion. In the championship season 1937/38 he was the second top scorer in the league with 20 goals. After a protracted knee injury, Zeman left the capital and played in the 1943/44 season for SK Pardubice , then briefly for SK Nusle .

After the Second World War , Zeman played for a year for the Prague first division club Čechie Karlín before he returned to České Budějovice in 1946 and helped the team into the 1st Czechoslovak League. His four goals in the 1947/48 season were not enough to keep them up.

At the 1938 World Cup he was part of the Czechoslovak squad. In the first round match against the Netherlands , which the ČSR won 3-0 after extra time, Zeman scored the Czechoslovaks second goal in the 110th minute of the game. It was also Zeman's last game in the national team's jersey.

Trainer

Zeman tried to bring Sokol JČE České Budějovice back into the first division as a coach in the 1949 season, but clearly failed. In the late 1950s he coached the third division Slavoj České Budějovice.
