José Leônidas da Silva (born September 6, 1913 in Rio de Janeiro , † January 24, 2004 in Cotia ) was a Brazilian football player .

Career

societies

Leônidas da Silva played in the course of his footballing career with the top Brazilian teams FC São Paulo , Botafogo FR , CR Vasco da Gama and Flamengo Rio de Janeiro .

In 1933 he played for Peñarol Montevideo in Uruguay . Da Silva, who played in the attack and whose nicknames were the "black diamond" and "rubber man", is sometimes - and in this respect controversial - referred to as the inventor of the fall retractor . He himself did not want to be regarded as this. He scored the first goal with an overhead kick on April 24, 1932 for Bonsucesso .

National team

He made his debut on December 4, 1932 in Montevideo in a 2-1 win over the Uruguayan selection in the Copa Río Branco . In the jersey of the Seleção , he played 26 international matches (only 19 of which are officially considered such) and scored 25 goals. At the 1938 World Cup in France , he became the tournament's top scorer with seven goals.

In the legendary game against Poland alone (final result: 6: 5 a.s.) he scored three goals. In this game he sometimes played barefoot. Leonida's 6: 5 winning goal in extra time was legendary when he grabbed the ball in the kick-off circle, curled it into the penalty area and scored his team with a great goal in the quarter-finals. In the semifinals, the slightly ailing Leonidas was not used, as the coach expected a safe progress anyway. Without the striker, Brazil lost 2-1 to the defending champions from Italy. In his two World Cup appearances in 1934 and 1938, he scored a total of eight goals and has been one of the most successful Brazilian goal scorers of all time in World Cup tournaments.

successes

Others

Da Silva was the first promotional ambassador for Brazilian football. He advertised cigarettes and a chocolate with his nickname the chocolate Diamante Negro .

After his sports career, he initially worked as a manager at São Paulo FC. He then became one of the most famous sports reporters in Brazil and won the Troféu Roquette Pinto seven times . Da Silva was also the owner of a furniture store in São Paulo .

In the 1951 film Susana eo Presidente , da Silva played himself and also showed his overhead kick.

Da Silva suffered from Alzheimer's disease . Because of this, he had to end his career as a presenter in 1974. He spent the last ten years of his life in a clinic. His treatment was funded by his former club, São Paulo. Da Silva was buried in São Paulo in the Cemitério da Paz cemetery .
