Bruno Engelmeier (born September 5, 1927 in Vienna , Austria ; † July 2, 1991 ) was an Austrian soccer player and soccer coach .
Club career
The sporting career of the goalkeeper Engelmeier began during the war years at SC Rapid Oberlaa . In 1943 he made his debut in the combat team after the previous goalkeeper Josef Hruby moved to the Vienna AC . With the favorites he was able to win the second-class 1st class Vienna A in 1944 , but the club failed in the ascent playoff at SK Admira Vienna . In 1945 Engelmeier played for a few months for the SKV fire brigade Vienna , but returned after the war to his parent club, which was now ranked in the top division. In his first first division game, the goalkeeper had to allow seven hits from the Wiener Sport-Club and subsequently the Oberlaaer proved unsuitable for the first division and ended the season with four points in a relegation rank. The young athletic goalkeeper was noticed by the bigger clubs and was finally signed by First Vienna FC in 1946 .
With the Döblingern, Engelmeier immediately had a regular place in the goal, where he replaced the older former national player Rudolf Raftl . Vienna was able to end the season in third place and was in the middle of the table in the following years before reaching third place again in 1952. After the end of this season, the blue-yellows signed a second top goalie, Kurt Schmied, and the following years were characterized by a duel for the regular position, in which the two competitors initially regularly replaced each other. Finally Schmied was able to secure the starting place and Engelmeier was awarded to FC Wien in the spring of 1954 . Another engagement failed, however, and Engelmeier returned to Döbling, where he did not appear in the championship as a substitute in the 1954/55 championship season. Engelmeier was then able to secure a regular place again before Schmied returned to the larger number of assignments in the 1957/58 season. Engelmeier then left the club and worked for the 1st Simmeringer SC for three years before he ended his active career.
National team
Engelmeier made his debut in the national team in September 1949 in a 3-1 win against Czechoslovakia . Despite good club performance, he was in the team for a long time in the shadow of rapist goalkeeper Walter Zeman and his club colleague Kurt Schmied, so that he did not get back to a starting position in the national team until 1955, when he became the hero of Wrexham against Wales . In 1956 he played regularly, including a 1-1 draw against Scotland in Glasgow. In the 1958 FIFA World Cup Engel Meier was a member of the squad, however, was one of four players who remained on call in Austria, while Smith and Rudolf Szanwald were employed in Sweden. He played his tenth and last game for Austria in November this year in Berlin in a 2-2 draw against Germany .
Coaching career
After the end of his active career, Engelmeier began his coaching career and in 1962 led the factory club FC Philips Vienna into the third-class Vienna league. From 1962 to 1964 he was the coach of Vienna, where he initiated a reorganization of the team and reached two eighth places during this period. He then did volunteer work for the ÖFB, where he looked after the junior team and acted as a talent seeker. In the 1965/66 season he was also the coach of his home club Rapid Oberlaa.
Even as an active player, Engelmeier was employed as a civil servant at the municipality of Vienna, where he was responsible for the vehicle fleet.
