The USSR team played strong in Group C and came first ahead of the French. A furious start against the disappointing Hungarians (6: 0) was followed by a cautious 1: 1 against France and with a reserve eleven a 2: 0 against the debutants Canada. Hungary defeated Canada 2-0, but had no chance against France at 3-0 and was allowed to travel home together with Canada after the preliminary round.
