The Estadio Sergio León Chávez is a football stadium in Irapuato , Guanajuato . It is located in the Chinacos district, the financial and business center of the city. The stadium serves as the home ground for CD Irapuato and was the venue for the 1986 World Cup .

history

The stadium was opened on March 23, 1969 as the Estadio Irapuato . It was given its current name on January 4, 1990 in recognition of the services the then President of CD Irapuato had earned in building the stadium.

Play-off games for the Mexican football championship have not yet been played in the stadium because CD Irapuato has never qualified for the final battle for the championship. Only once, in the winter of 2000, could the Freseros qualify as the worst runners-up in the group for the so-called Repechaje , where they played against the best third in the group, Monarcas Morelia , for a place in the Liguilla play-offs. Irapuato won his home game 1-0, but then lost 7-2 at the Estadio Morelos . A small consolation for this hearty slap was probably only that Morelia was able to secure the championship title in the subsequent play-offs.

World Cup 1986

In return, Irapuato had got the upper hand over Morelia 15 years earlier. Morelia was chosen to be one of the 12 venues for the 1986 World Cup . However, because it was not possible to prove a World Cup-compatible stadium in time, the World Cup location originally intended for Morelia was transferred to the city of Irapuato.

In the Estadio Irapuato, as it was called at the time, three group C preliminary round games were played (the other three games, all with France, took place at the Estadio Nou Camp in León , Irapuato's great football rival):

  • 02.06. USSR - Hungary 6-0 (16,600 spectators)
  • 06.06. Hungary 2-0 Canada (13,800 spectators)
  • 09.06. USSR 2-0 Canada (14,200 spectators)

The above The audience figures show that the interest in the World Cup in Irapuato was not particularly pronounced. The biggest backdrop was still in the opening game. It was worth it for the 16,600 spectators who were present: they saw not only six goals, but the highest victory of this World Cup.

The greatest triumph

As already mentioned, there has never been a play-off game for the Mexican football championship at the local stadium. And so the stadium's biggest event was likely to have taken place on June 21, 2003. After CD Irapuato won the Apertura 2002 of Primera División 'A' and its arch-rival Club León won the Clausura 2003, these two deeply rival clubs faced each other in the promotion finals. With the 2-1 win in León, the Freseros de Irapuato had already created the best starting position and three days later followed suit with the 1-0 win in front of their home crowd and made the promotion perfect. The fact that the return to the Primera División succeeded, of all things, with two wins against the arch-rivals, increased the triumph immeasurably.
