After not being among the best runners-up in the group, the Belgians had to play two play-offs against the Netherlands . The first leg took place on October 16, 1985 in Brussels in front of over 36,000 spectators. The Dutch were reduced to ten men immediately after four minutes, as Wim Kieft was sent off for a gross foul, the hosts used their nominal superiority and scored the opening goal in the 20th minute, which they defended until the end of the game. The goal scorer was Frank Vercauteren.
The second leg was played in Rotterdam on November 20, 1985 , the Dutch took the lead after an hour through Peter Houtman , before Rob de Wit increased to 2-0 for the Oranje. With this stand the Belgian traraoke Guy Thys changed in the 75th minute Daniel Veyt , who crossed to Georges Grün ten minutes later after brilliant preparatory work , Green then scored the connecting goal for Belgium five minutes before the end, which is due to the away goals rule for the World Cup in Mexico qualified.
