Arne Eriksson

Arne Eriksson (born January 15, 1916 ) is a former Finnish football referee . He gained national fame by directing finals at the 1958 World Cup .

Career

Eriksson comes from the Finnish city of Jakobstad and was a member of the local football club IF Drott , which has competed in the top Finnish league several times in its history - albeit without lasting success .

As a referee, Eriksson led games in the then Mestaruussarja Finnish championship in the 1950s , and in 1958 he was responsible for the game management in the final of the Finnish national cup between KTP and Kiffen .

Eriksson also whistled for international matches. In 1955 he had first experience as a referee at a national tournament when he was one of the referees at the Nordic Football Championship . Three years later he led the final group game of Group C between Hungary and Mexico at the World Cup finals , in which the runner-up world champions Hungary forced a play-off against Wales with a 4-0 win .
