Jaime David Gómez Munguía (born December 29, 1929 in Manzanillo , Colima , † May 4, 2008 in Guadalajara , Jalisco ) was a Mexican football goalkeeper who played for Chivas Guadalajara from 1949 to 1964 and was part of the legendary team that played in the nine Years between 1957 and 1965 he was champion seven times and was nicknamed "Campeonísimo". He was also known by his nickname "el Tubo" (the pipe).
Life
"Tubo" Gómez began his footballer career in the junior division of the Colegio "Luis Silva" as a striker and only switched to goal later.
Not only because of his almost 300 games for Guadalajara, 123 of them without interruption between 1949 and 1956, Gómez is a special symbol of Club Deportivo Guadalajara, but especially because of his great love for the club and identification with its philosophy of only local players under contract to take. Examples of this are his following statements:
“To be a Chiva means to be proud of this country and to be part of a social phenomenon that has its origin in the workforce and in work par excellence. I am proud to have been part of this great Mexican team. "
“The rapid increase in foreign players is damaging Mexican football and especially the national team . The great successes of Guadalajara have shown that there is another way. In this respect, Guadalajara is a role model. I'm not xenophobic, but I would like a gentleman agreement from the club bosses not to sign any more foreign players in order to improve the quality of Mexican football. It is time for our football to finally realize its potential. "
Jaime Gómez made his international debut on February 26, 1956 against Costa Rica (1: 1) and was nominated for the Soccer World Cups in 1958 and 1962 as one of three goalkeepers. Although Gómez was an excellent goalkeeper, he was unlucky to be the "eternal number two" behind the Mexican goalkeeper legend Antonio Carbajal . So he only came to a total of eight international appearances. However, he did not come to a World Cup.
Gómez succumbed to cancer of the pancreas at the age of 78 on May 4, 2008 .
