Autograph by Salvador "Chava" Reyes (approx. 1957)

Salvador Reyes Monteón (born September 20, 1936 in Guadalajara , Jalisco state ; † December 29, 2012 ibid) was a Mexican football player who played for Chivas Guadalajara between 1952 and 1967 and was part of the legendary team that formed in the nine years between 1957 and in 1965 was seven times Mexican champion and was nicknamed "Campeonísimo". He was also known by his nickname "Chava" (girl).

Career

Chava Reyes was a talented offensive player who could be used in any position in midfield and attack. In fact, he played sometimes as a right middle runner and sometimes as a left winger, depending on where he was needed. His actual regular position, however, was the role of the center forward. There he was able to realize his scoring danger best, which his total of 122 goals in the Mexican league for his hometown club Chivas Guadalajara testify, whose most successful goalscorer he has remained to this day. Reyes scored his first goal in the league round on November 29, 1953 in a local derby against city rivals CD Oro , when he succeeded in the 72nd minute of the connection goal for the later 2: 3 final score. Much more successful was the start of the following season 1954/55 for "Chava" Reyes , when he contributed four hits to the 5-2 win against CF Atlante in the opening match . In the first half he managed a flawless hat trick to lead the 3-0 break. His most successful season was the 1961/62 season , when he was top scorer in the Mexican league with 21 goals - level with last year's winner Carlos Armando Lara from CD Zacatepec - and thus had a significant share in the fourth championship title of the Chivasi in a row.

Reyes, one of the greatest idols in the history of Club Deportivo Guadalajara, was not only the club's most successful goalscorer until his death, but was also one of the outstanding players of his time in Mexico. This is also evidenced by the fact that he was - incidentally, the only player from the "Campeonísimo" era - to be appointed to a football World Cup three times ( 1958 , 1962 and 1966 ) and to have played all World Cup games.

Chava Reyes made his international debut on March 4, 1956 against Peru (0-2). He celebrated his first goal scoring in the dress of the national team on April 7, 1957 against the USA (6-0), when he immediately managed a three-pack. He played a total of 48 international matches (44 of which were full length) and scored 14 goals. After the 1966 World Cup , he ended his national team career and a year later he left his long-standing club to play first in the United States for the Los Angeles Toros and then back in his home country for CF Laguna and San Luis FC .

On January 20, 2008, Reyes was due to his services to Mexican football in the first division game of Deportivo Guadalajara against the UNAM Pumas in the starting line-up and carried out the kick-off before he - in the first minute of the game - was substituted for Omar Bravo . This makes Reyes the oldest player in football history to be used in a professional league.
