Guillermo Sepúlveda

Guillermo Sepúlveda Rodríguez (born February 28, 1934 in Guadalajara , Jalisco ) is a former Mexican football player and an excellent central defender , who celebrated his greatest successes with Chivas Guadalajara . He was part of the legendary team that was seven times Mexican champion in the nine years between 1957 and 1965 and was nicknamed "Campeonísimo". He was also known by his nickname "El Tigre" (The Tiger).

career

Sepúlveda started at Atlas Guadalajara in 1952 and moved a year later to his long-term association Chivas, with which he also celebrated his greatest successes. However, he was not part of the championship squad in the 1958/59 season because after his injury at the 1958 World Cup he failed to register in time for the season following the World Cup . In 1966 he switched to the Jabatos de Nuevo León and in 1968 he returned to Guadalajara to the Club Deportivo Oro , where he ended his active career.

Sepúlveda was a player who stood out for his uncompromising commitment and fighting spirit. He gave the defense stability and was considered one of the most charismatic players of his time.

He made his international debut on April 28, 1957 in the USA , where the Mexican selection downright outclassed the hosts 7-2. He made a total of 30 international matches. "El Tigre" was both the 1958 World Cup and for the 1962 World Cup nominated and played a total of four World Cup matches. Although he was named captain of the team that traveled to England for the World Cup before the 1966 World Cup , he was dismissed from the national team on June 12, 1966 due to quarrels before the World Cup. His last international match was on April 25, 1966 against Paraguay . Based on the result, it can in retrospect be called a worthy farewell, because Mexico won this game 7-0.
