Club career

Ángel Berni began his career at Club Olimpia from the Paraguayan capital Asunción . After going through the club's youth departments from 1945 to 1949, he was accepted into the professional squad of the record champions of Paraguay in 1949 . After two years in Olimpia, in which he could not celebrate a championship , he went on to Colombia to the Boca Juniors in Cali . There he won the cup , but after only one year went to CA San Lorenzo de Almagro in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires . At San Lorenzo he played together with other great footballers such as the Argentinian top striker José Sanfilippo or his compatriot René Pontoni . During his time with San Lorenzo de Almagro, Ángel Berni succeeded in his last season with the club in 1959, winning the Argentine championship with a seven point lead from Racing Club de Avellaneda . In 1954 he was in the service of CA San Lorenzo de Almagro with 29 goals top scorer of the Primera División Argentina. In 1959 he then moved to league rivals Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata , where he could not prevail and not even a year later left South America and Betis Sevilla joined from Spain . Berni let his career end there from 1960 to 1964.

National team

Ángel Berni was also active in the Paraguayan national team . He took part in the 1950 World Cup in Brazil , for which Paraguay had automatically qualified because Ecuador and Peru had renounced . In Brazil, however, they failed after the preliminary round. In Group C, Paraguay played alongside Sweden and Italy after India canceled. Against the Northern Europeans Paraguay managed a 2-2 draw, but then they lost to Italy with 0-2, so that they were eliminated as the bottom of the group. Ángel Berni was used in both Paraguayan games.
