The river Mawddach [ ˈmaʊ̯ðaχ ] ( Welsh : Afon Mawddach ) is located in North Wales and drains the vast Snowdonia area north of Dduallt . The river is ramified, and its branches are the same size as the river itself. The catchment area is bounded to the east by the Aran Fawddwy massif and to the west and north by the ridges of Harlech Dome , which forms a watershed south of Llyn Trawsfynydd form.

The landscape through which the Mawddach flows is partly among the most beautiful and spectacular in Great Britain. Below Dolgellau , the river forms a sandy estuary with mostly densely forested mountains reaching 12 km inland, which can be crossed on a small toll bridge at Penmaenpool . On the coast, reaching Railway Aberystwyth Pwhllheli place Barmouth on the north side of the wide estuary using a wooden bridge construction from the year 1867th

Industrialization and land management have had a lasting impact on the Mawddach area. In the middle of the 19th century, more than two dozen gold mines started operations, which, together with the widespread gold panning, had a considerable impact. But the forestry and fur industry, the storage of ammunition and the use of the mountain area as an artillery training area were also at the expense of the environment.

Due to the sometimes very large amounts of precipitation, the water level of the Mawddach fluctuates noticeably. This also affects the pH of the river water, which can get extremely low. Despite these unfavorable conditions, fishing for salmon and trout is of considerable economic importance.
