Goals: none

The West Germans' opening game against Chile in Group I really did not meet the high expectations. The spectators in Berlin's Olympic Stadium did not expect that Paul Breitner's (17th) long-range shot would remain the only goal. Chile stood compactly in the defense and the West Germans found no further means to crack this bulwark. A disappointing start, but at least a victory, was the general tenor. As a second opponent, the West Germans had the Australians. Previously only the amount of victory had been discussed, even if the Aussies did not disappoint against the GDR at 2-0. The goals of Cologne's Overath and Cullmann in the first half brought security, but really no fireworks of German artistry. The enemy was too harmless. Müller only managed to make it 3-0. Chile and the GDR had meanwhile separated 1: 1 and the decision to win the group should be made between the two German teams. In the extremely mixed game in Hamburg's Volksparkstadion, both teams neutralized each other at a low level. When everyone had expected a sluggish goalless draw, Jürgen Sparwasser countered the West Germans and scored an untenable 1-0 for the East Germans. The sensation was perfect, but both German teams qualified for the final round because Chile couldn't get past a 0-0 draw against Australia.
