Mario Enrique Galindo Calixto (born August 10, 1951 in Punta Arenas ) is a former Chilean football player. Active for Colo-Colo Santiago at club level most of the time , he also took part in the 1974 and 1982 World Cups with the national team of his home country.

Career

Club career

Mario Galindo, born in 1951 in the city of Punta Arenas in the deep south of Chile , was discovered early by talent scouts of today's record champions CSD Colo-Colo and subsequently went through the youth departments of the club from the capital Santiago . In 1971 Galindo, who was to be found in the position of a defender, was accepted into the first team and played in this initially until 1975. During this time, in 1972, he won the Chilean football championship. This title was achieved by a first place in the Primera División with three points ahead of Unión Española . With the 1972 championship, Colo-Colo was eligible to compete in the 1973 Copa Libertadores . Here the team of coach Luis Álamos caused a sensation when they were the first in group two of the second group phase in front of the Paraguayan representatives Club Cerro Porteño and Botafogo Rio de Janeiro from Brazil as the first Chilean team to ever reach the final in this competition. There, the team around players like Francisco Valdés , Carlos Caszely and Sergio Ahumada met the Argentinian defending champion from Independiente Avellaneda , who was only inferior in extra time of the play-off. Mario Galindo was used in the defense of Colo-Colo in all three finals.

For the 1976 season, Mario Galindo left Colo-Colo and went to CD Everton de Viña del Mar for a year , where he won the championship of Chile again in just one year. This time Galindo's team prevailed in a final for the championship against Unión Española with 0-0 and 3-1, which was the third title win in the club's history.

From 1977 Galindo played again for Colo-Colo and did so until 1982. During this time, two more Chilean championship titles could be added to the collection of the defender. In 1979 and 1981 Galindo was successful with Colo-Colo in the Chilean championship. However, this team of the record champions was unable to build on the international successes of the early seventies. In 1983 Mario Galindo interrupted his activity at Colo-Colo again for a year and spent the Primera División 1983 with the Santiago Wanderers , before returning to his home club for the following season, playing football there for another year and starting his football career in 1984 finished by 33 years.

National team

Between 1972 and 1982 Mario Galindo made a total of 23 international matches for the Chilean national soccer team . He didn't get a hit. National coach Luis Álamos called him into the South American squad for the 1974 World Cup in Germany . In the final round, however, Galindo was not used, while the Chilean selection was eliminated in the preliminary round in a group with the GDR , the Federal Republic of Germany and Australia as third group.

Eight years later at the Soccer World Cup in Spain in 1982 , Mario Galindo was there again, but was again not used. The Chilean team was eliminated again after the preliminary round without having scored a point. After the finals in 1982, Mario Galindo ended his national team career after 23 games from 1972 to 1982.
