Sergio Ahumada played for Colo-Colo until 1974 and made a total of 107 games with 41 goals for the record champions Chile. He then went to Unión Española for a year, where in that one year Ahumada immediately won the championship of Chile for the third time. In the second leg, Independiente won 3: 1 and thus forced a play-off. The Argentine series winners then won 2-0 and were able to secure the Copa Libertadores for the fourth time in a row.

After a very successful year at Unión Española, Sergio Ahumada left his Chilean homeland and went to Estudiantes Tecos in Mexico .
