Joseph "José" François Gustave Marie de Meijer (born May 3, 1915 in Terneuzen , province of Zeeland ; † October 23, 2000 in Zeist , province of Utrecht ) was a Dutch politician of the Katholieke Volkspartij (KVP) and most recently of the Christian Democratisch Appèl ( CDA), who was, among other things, State Secretary and member of the Second Chamber of the States General .

Life

Studies and professional career

De Meijer completed after attending the Antwerp commercial school between September 1933 and February 22, 1939, a degree in economics at the Catholic School of Economics in Tilburg and study visits to London and Paris . He then began his professional career as a secretary in the Central Raw Materials Office of the War Department and was then from 1940 executive secretary of the Royal Van Leer packaging industry in Amsterdam , New York City and Curaçao . During this time, he completed his doctorate in economics on November 16, 1945 at the Catholic School of Business in Tilburg with a dissertation on aspects of the Netherlands IJzer- en Staalproduktie voor de industrie .

After the end of the Second World War , he was a member of the board of directors of the packaging company Van Leer until 1956, where he was responsible for western economic markets and then between 1956 and 1963 as a management consultant. During this time he also began his political career in the Katholieke Volkspartij (KVP) and had been a member of its party council since 1952 as well as vice-chairman of the social and economic commission. In addition, he was involved until 1963 as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Catholic Business School Tilburg, the board of the Sint Radboud-Stichting and the Academic Council.

State Secretary and member of the Second Chamber of the States General

On November 15, 1963 de Meijer was appointed by Prime Minister Victor Marijnen as State Secretary for Employment, Occupational Safety and Health, Company Councils and Public Company Organization in the Ministry of Social Affairs and Public Health ( Ministerie van Sociale Zaken en Volksgezondheid ). He also held this position in the subsequent government of Jo Cals and in the cabinet of Prime Minister Jelle Zijlstra until April 5, 1967. He was then honored on April 17, 1967 with the Knight's Cross of the Order of Orange-Nassau .

Shortly after leaving the government, on February 23, 1967, he became a member of the Second Chamber of the States General and represented the interests of the Katholieke Volkspartij until May 10, 1971.

From 1971 onwards, de Meijer was chairman of the board of directors of the sea and road transport company Verbrugge de Meijer and a member of the seaport, transport and waterways advisory commission.
