Career

Club career

Alfonso Lara, born in 1946 in the Chilean capital Santiago , began playing football for the CD Magallanes club in the Maipú district of the capital. The midfielder played for Magallanes for two years in the seasons 1968 and 1969 and during this time he played a total of 64 league games with six goals for the four-time Chilean soccer champions. For the 1970 season he moved to Lota Schwager , a then consistently top-notch playing club today, and was there under contract for three and a half years. After this time and after completing 102 games in the Chilean Primera División , Alfonso Lara Lota left Schwager again and went to the record champions Colo-Colo Santiago .

At Colo-Colo, Lara experienced the most successful period of his career, initially starting with reaching the final in the Copa Libertadores in 1973 , just a few months after starting his involvement with Colo-Colo. The team around players like Francisco Valdés , Carlos Caszely and Mario Galindo were only defeated by the Argentine representative of Independiente Avellaneda in the play-off of the final, after they had been drawn on the return leg. Alfonso Lara was only a substitute player there, he was substituted in for Leonardo Véliz in the final first leg and in the playoff, and he missed the second leg entirely. At national level, Alfonso Lara once won the Chilean cup competition with Colo-Colo. In the 1974 draw, they beat the Santiago Wanderers 3-0. Meanwhile, he was denied a championship triumph.

In 1977 Alfonso Lara Colo-Colo left his back and switched to CD Everton de Viña del Mar , who won the Chilean championship in the preseason. Again, Lara could not win the title and ended his career in 1979 at the age of 33 without winning the championship title.

National team

Between 1968 and 1975 Alfonso Lara made five appearances in the Chilean national soccer team . A goal he did not succeed. National coach Luis Álamos called him into the South American squad for the 1974 World Cup in Germany . Lara only played one game at the tournament, the first group game against the German hosts. He was also substituted in for Juan Rodriguez in the 84th minute of the game . In the further course of the tournament there was no further use for the Colo-Colo player. With two draws and one defeat in the group stage, the Chilean team finished third in Group 1 behind the Federal Republic of Germany and the GDR as well as Australia and were eliminated.
