The national team after the final in Munich

At the 1974 World Cup in the Federal Republic of Germany , the German Football Association was the host association, and the German national football team was the home team.

The use of the terms “German” and “Germany” was complicated by the fact that for the first (and only) time the German Football Association of the GDR had qualified for a major football tournament with the GDR's national football team, as well as both German teams were drawn into a group.

qualification

As the host of this soccer world championship, the DFB team did not have to qualify for this tournament. Because of this, 15 test matches were played between November 15, 1972 and May 1, 1974, ten of which were won. However, there were also defeats to defending champions Brazil (0: 1) and Argentina (2: 3). The team played their last preparation game against Sweden on May 1, 1974 and won it 2-0 in Hamburg . Jupp Heynckes scored the two goals . The only player who was on the pitch at this game and who later did not belong to the squad for the World Cup was Schalke's Erwin Kremers , who received a red card in the final phase of the Bundesliga season because of a referee insult and from Helmut Schön then not for the World Cup taken into consideration.

The selection of the DFB was due to the third place at the previous World Cup, winning the European title in 1972 and the fact that they hosted, next to the Dutch as a big favorite to win the World Cup. In the group draw, Germany was seeded and it was impossible for the team to play in the preliminary round against the semi-finalists from 1970, Brazil, Italy or Uruguay, who were also seeded. The group draw showed Chile and the two newcomers to the World Cup, GDR and Australia, as group opponents.

First final round

The first group game took place on June 14th in the Berlin Olympic Stadium against Chile. The German team could not convince in this game. Although she scored the opening goal after 17 minutes after a long-range shot by Paul Breitner, the further attacks by the Germans could not endanger the Chilean defense. Even the majority after Carlos Caszely was sent off in the 67th minute could not be used by the German team. It remained 1-0 for the Federal Republic of Germany.

The next group opponent was Australia. A crowd of 53,000 in Volksparkstadion of Hamburg for the visitors was the dominant team and went after a few minutes in the lead, again with a shot from outside, this time from Overath in the 12th minute. Cullmann (32nd) and Gerd Müller (53rd) ensured the 3-0 final score. This victory was criticized, however, because the German players missed several clear scoring chances, especially in the first half, and thus gambled away a higher victory against the blatant outsider.

In the same stadium, the selection of the DFB met that of the DFV of the GDR ( football match BR Germany - GDR 1974 ). Since Chile and Australia had separated goalless the day before, the two teams with German players were already qualified for the next round. This game was about prestige and group victory, as well as the question of which teams you would meet in the second final round. Jürgen Sparwasser scored the only goal in this game for the GDR. The 1-0 win meant group victory and entry into Group A of the second final round, with the Netherlands, Brazil and Argentina. The Bundesliga professionals finished second and met Poland, Sweden and Yugoslavia.

FRG - Chile 1: 0 (1: 0)
FRG - Australia 3: 0 (2: 0)
FRG - GDR 0: 1 (0: 0)

Second final round

The defeat against the GDR triggered an internal team revolt (" Night of Malente ") against the indecisive and hesitant national coach Helmut Schön. From then on, the team under the leadership of Captain Franz Beckenbauer was able to implement their tactical ideas. You had to play in Group B against Poland , Sweden and Yugoslavia .

In the first game against Yugoslavia, the Germans were able to improve. In Düsseldorf's Rheinstadion , the opponent was defeated 2-0 by goals from Paul Breitner and Gerd Müller.

The FRG fell behind against the Swedes in the 24th minute when Ralf Edström was able to defeat Sepp Maier. Only in the second half did Overath equalize in the 51st and 52nd minute and Bonhof took the lead. Another minute later, Roland Sandberg was able to equalize. The Germans who determined the game showed their best tournament performance so far and ultimately won 4: 2 through Grabowski (76th) and Hoeneß (89th per penalty kick).

In Frankfurt there was the Frankfurt water battle in the game against Poland , heavy rain had made the field unplayable. However, the schedule did not allow the game to be postponed. The Polish team was stronger, but the FRG won with a goal from Gerd Müller in the 76th minute and qualified as group winners for the final. In the 53rd minute, the Polish goalkeeper Jan Tomaszewski saved a penalty from Hoeneß.

FRG - Yugoslavia 2: 0 (1: 0)
FRG - Sweden 4: 2 (0: 1)
FRG - Poland 1: 0 (0: 0)

final

In the final, the hosts met the Netherlands , which with their key players Johan Neeskens and Johan Cruyff and with the tactics of total football had eliminated Argentina, Brazil and the GDR in Group A in the second final round. Just a few seconds after the kick-off, the Dutch were awarded a penalty after a foul by Hoeneß just outside the penalty area, which Neeskens converted into the lead. Initially shocked by the early deficit, the Germans got stronger and stronger and scored the equalizer in the 25th minute, also with a penalty kick, transformed by Paul Breitner. Shortly before the break, after preliminary work by Rainer Bonhof, Gerd Müller scored the 2: 1 for the Germans with a shot from the shot. In the second half, the Dutch had several chances through Johnny Rep and Neeskens, but these were thwarted by Sepp Maier. In return, the Germans were denied an actually regular hit by Gerd Müller (because of offside). The game finally ended 2-1 - Germany was soccer world champion again after 1954.
