Career
Club career
Antonio Arias, born on October 9, 1944 in the Chilean capital Santiago , began playing football for the local CD Magallanes club , once the first Chilean football champion in the 1930s. With Magallanes, long since disappeared from the circle of the top clubs of the Primera División , Arias acted for four years from 1965 to 1968 as a defender before the top club Unión Española signed him .
At Unión Española Antonio Arias finally played in 300 league games from 1969 to 1979, in which the defender scored five goals. The Chilean football championship was won in three years, for the first time in 1973. That year, after all match days, they took first place in the Primera División with eight points ahead of CSD Colo-Colo . Antonio Arias was able to celebrate a second championship title with Unión Española in the 1975 season when they positioned themselves in the table at the end of the season two points ahead of Deportes Concepción in first place. 1975 was generally the most successful year in Antonio Arias' career and also in the history of Unión Española. The team coached by Luis Santibanez to the players such as Sergio Ahumada , Mario Soto or Leonardo Véliz belonged, reached the final of the Copa Libertadores after in the second group stage before de Universitario Deportes of Peru and LDU Quito of Ecuador was able to prevail . In the final that followed, they met the Argentine club Independiente Avellaneda , who had advanced to a kind of serial champion in the Copa Libertadores in previous years . And against Independiente Antonio Arias had to accept a defeat with Unión Española, even if it was very close. After the first and second leg it was a draw, which meant that a decider for the Copa Libertadores winner in 1975 had to decide. Independiente then won this play-off 2-0.
After reaching the final in the Copa Libertadores in 1975, the performance of Unión Española went slightly downhill again. As a result, you could only win the Chilean championship once more, in 1977. In that season you ended up with two points ahead of CD Everton de Viña del Mar , first in the Primera División. Until 2005 this should be the last championship for Unión Española. Antonio Arias himself ended his active career at the end of the 1979 season in the shirt of Unión Española, having previously played in 300 league games for the club on the field.
National team
Between 1968 and 1976 Antonio Arias made a total of 30 appearances in the Chilean national football team . He did not succeed in scoring. National coach Luis Álamos called him into the South American squad for the 1974 World Cup in Germany . Arias was used in all three games over the full playing time and was an integral part of the Chilean defense at this tournament. With two draws and one defeat in the group stage, the team finished third in Group 1 behind the Federal Republic of Germany and the GDR as well as Australia and was eliminated.
