Germany started in group 2 with a negative sensation. Against the technically strong Algerians there was a 1: 2 defeat. Paul Breitner, who was brought back to the team by national coach Jupp Derwall, and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, who was previously announced as a superstar of the World Cup, were extremely disappointing. Against the Chileans who were hardly ready for the World Cup, there was a constructive 4-1 (3 goals from Rummenigge) and the 1-0 against Austria went down as a scandal in World Cup history. After 1-0, both teams were qualified, as Algeria did not play against Chile (3-2) at the same time, the two neighbors could play for a result and did so in front of millions of spectators worldwide by after the 11th minute (1-0, Hrubesch) only ball attachments took place. The worldwide noise in the forest afterwards was understandably devastating and had a long lasting effect.
