Hungary started with a 10: 1 against El Salvador and thus achieved the highest World Cup victory of all time (Yugoslavia defeated Zaire on June 18, 1974 in Gelsenkirchen 9: 0 and Hungary and South Korea on June 17, 1954 in Zurich also 9: 0 so that both had the same goal difference). Nevertheless, the defeats against world champions Argentina and the draw against vice European champions Belgium led to the elimination. Hungary was in second place in the group table until the 76th minute. In the history of the World Championships, no team with a better goal difference has been eliminated in the preliminary round than Hungary in 1982.
