Michel Hidalgo let all the players compete in the game for third place who had not yet played in this tournament. Without players like Platini, Genghini or Giresse, the team was only worth half and, above all, the disappointment of the bitter elimination in the semi-finals did the rest that the team had little to oppose against Poland . Nevertheless, fourth place was the greatest success for France since third place at the 1958 World Cup in Sweden and was the basis for winning the 1984 European Football Championship in their own country.
