Kuwaiti Games

As a newcomer to the World Cup, Kuwait was drawn into group three together with the European teams from England , France and Czechoslovakia .

In the first game the Kuwaitis managed a 1-1 draw against the ČSSR. Antonín Panenka had initially shot the Eastern Europeans in the lead, but Faisal ad-Dachil was able to equalize after an hour.

In the game against France, one of the most memorable moments of the tournament came: When the French scored their fourth goal at 3-1, the Kuwaiti Sheikh Fahid al-Ahmad as-Sabah stormed the field and threatened to abandon the game if the goal was not canceled becomes. After a long discussion, the referee gave in. Shortly thereafter, Maxime Bossis scored the fourth goal again and France finally won 4-1. Kuwait also lost their last game against England 1-0 to a Trevor Francis goal .
