The Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero (formerly known as Nuevo Estadio or Nuevo Altabix ) is a football stadium in the Spanish city of Elche . The facility offers space for 36,017 spectators (20,653 seats on the lower grandstand ring and 15,364 seats on the upper part of the grandstand); is the property as well as the sporting home of the football club FC Elche . Except for the seats under the overhang of the upper stand, the arena is completely uncovered. There are 2,184 parking spaces around the building.
history
The Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero in Elche , a city in the Valencian Community , was built in 1976. On September 8th, the stadium was inaugurated with a friendly game between the future user of the arena, FC Elche , and the Mexican national football team . The game (which ended 3: 3) took place in front of 25,000 spectators because the construction of the spectator stands was not yet completed. Since that day, the FC Elche club has been using the stadium as a venue for home games. The greatest success in the club's history of this club was a final participation in the Copa del Rey , in the season 1968/69. The best placement in the Primera División was a fifth place in 1963/64. FC Elche is currently playing in the second Spanish division, the Segunda División .
Six years after its inauguration, the Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero was one of the venues for the 1982 World Cup , which Spain was able to secure. Despite its size - after all, there was space for 53,000 spectators in this stadium in 1982 - it was only used for preliminary round matches. However, one of these preliminary round matches in Elche went down in the history of the World Cup when Hungary beat El Salvador 10-1 . Two other games were held here in the same group. First Belgium won 1-0 against outsider El Salvador in front of a mini-crowd of 15,000 spectators, and then Belgium and Hungary played 1-1 in the final group game in front of 37,000 spectators. Another major event at this stadium, named after Manuel Martinez Valero, a president of Elche FC, was the 2002/03 Copa del Rey final, where RCD Mallorca won the national cup 3-0 against Recreativo Huelva .
