Juan Carlos Letelier Pizarro (born May 20, 1959 in Valparaíso ) is a former Chilean football player and current coach. He was part of the CD Cobreloa team , which reached the final of the Copa Libertadores twice in a row , continued to play for Santiago Wanderers , SC Internacional and FC Caracas, among others , and took part in the 1982 World Cup in Spain with the national team of his home country part.
Career
Club career
Juan Carlos Letelier, born in 1959 in the port city of Valparaíso on the west coast of Chile , began playing football at the local club CD Santiago Wanderers , where he made his debut in the first team in 1978. Letelier, who acted as an attacker, played for the Santiago Wanderers for the following two years before he joined Audax Italiano La Florida for a year in 1981 , without causing a sensation there.
After 27 league games for Audax Italiano, Juan Carlos Letelier moved to CD Cobreloa for the 1982 season . The club from the mining town of Calama , founded only a few years earlier, had already made it into the final of the Copa Libertadores last year , but failed there against Brazilian representative Flamengo Rio de Janeiro . In 1982 coach Vicente Cantatore's team , which included players such as Mario Soto , Óscar Wirth and Enzo Escobar, performed surprisingly well in the Libertadores Cup. In the first group stage they finished first ahead of Colo-Colo Santiago and the two Ecuadorian representatives LDU Quito and Barcelona SC Guayaquil . Also in the second group phase you could leave both opponents behind, in this case the Olimpia Asunción from Paraguay and Deportes Tolima from Colombia , thus the renewed participation in the finals was ensured. This time the opponent was called CA Peñarol and, like last year, Flamengo was favored. After a goalless draw in Montevideo , there was much to be said for Cobreloa to be successful, but in the second leg at the Estadio Nacional in Santiago de Chile, Cobreloa lost 1-0 with a late goal from Fernando Morena , so the Copa Libertadores title went to Uruguay .
At the national level, Juan Carlos Letelier also managed to win titles with Cobreloa. So in 1982 and 1985 they won the Chilean football championship. A year after the last track, Juan Carlos Letelier and CD Cobreloa parted ways. The striker left his club after six years and went to Colombia to join Independiente Medellín . With this station, an odyssey began that led Letelier to various clubs in South American football. So he was in Peru with both Universitario de Deportes (1992) and Sporting Cristal (1994) champion, but played for both clubs for only one year. He was also active in Brazil for Internacional Porto Alegre , in Venezuela for FC Caracas and in Mexico for CD Cruz Azul . Letelier also returned to Chile, where he ended his footballing career in 1995 at the age of 36 as a player for Deportes La Serena . Later he also worked as a coach, but did not appear in higher-class football.
National team
Between 1979 and 1989 Juan Carlos Letelier made a total of 57 appearances in the Chilean national football team . He achieved eighteen goals. By national coach Luis Santibáñez he was appointed to the South American squad for the 1982 World Cup in Spain. Letelier was used twice in the tournament, where he was only substituted on both times. In the group game against Germany (1: 4) he followed Mario Soto in the second half, in the final group game against Algeria (2: 3) he came on for Carlos Caszely in the 38th minute , after the African newcomer to the World Cup with 3: 0 had led. For the Chilean team, this World Cup was disastrous. Without winning a single point, they were eliminated in the group stage in a group with Germany , Austria and Algeria .
In addition to the soccer world championship, Juan Carlos Letelier took part with the Chilean national team in the South American championships in 1983, 1987 and 1989, but did not win the title. After the latter tournament, he ended his national team career at the age of thirty and after 57 appearances.
