Deportivo Independiente Medellín is a Colombian football club from the city of Medellín . The club was founded on April 15, 1913 and is one of the largest and most important clubs in Colombian football . The club colors are blue-red-white. One of the greatest triumphs was winning the Colombian football championship in 1955, with the Argentine star José Manuel Moreno as player-coach, and in 1957, as well as the Finalización 2002, the Apertura 2004, the Finalización 2009 and the Apertura 2016. International was the greatest success of the Entry into the semi-finals of the 2003 Copa Libertadores South American Championship.
There is a pronounced rivalry with city rivals Atlético Nacional , against whom the Clásico Paisa will be played. Independiente is often referred to in the media as "The Power from the Mountains" ( El Poderoso de la Montaña ), as the city of Medellín is located on the heights of the Andes around 1500 m above sea level.
Stadion
Independiente shares the Estadio Atanasio Girardot, named after a hero of the Colombian War of Independence at the beginning of the 19th century, with its local rival Atlético Nacional .
The 52,872-seat stadium was inaugurated in 1953 and is part of the extensive Unidad Deportiva Atanasio Girardot sports complex . It was also the venue for the 2001 Copa America and the 2011 World Youth Championship .
