The Comparis.ch AG is the operator of the largest Swiss online comparison service comparis.ch . Since June 2000 comparis.ch has been a stock corporation based in Zurich and today has more than 180 employees.

history

In May 1996 the economist Richard Eisler founded the Comparis GmbH together with the computer scientist Marc Pilloud in Ettingen / BL. In August 1996, the first comparison of Swiss health insurance premiums was available on a website. Today comparis.ch compares not only health insurance premiums , but also car , motorcycle , household contents , personal liability , travel , life and legal expenses insurance . In the area of telecommunications, the charges for mobile communications , Internet providers and TV providers are compared. In the banking sector, consumer loans , credit cards , mortgages , interest , pension products and taxes can be compared with one another. Comparis also operates a search service for real estate, car and retail offers. Comparis also offers specific information services. These include the parent and child area and the immigration assistant for people who want to move to Switzerland from abroad. According to comparis.ch, almost 120,000 people decided to move to Switzerland last year. Comparis is also active in social media and communicates on Facebook , Twitter , Google+ , YouTube , XING and LinkedIn via its own company profiles . In the course of the emerging trend of live and club shopping in Switzerland, a so-called price drop channel was also set up on Facebook, where particularly good special offers from the entertainment electronics and white goods sectors are published. In April 2013, the falling price channel was discontinued. For this purpose, since 2013 comparis.ch has been offering several apartment and car search channels on Facebook. A selection of the best advertisements from the comparis.ch housing and car market is published here around the clock.

In March 2010 comparis.ch won silver in the special category “Simply the Best” on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Swiss Internet award “ Best of Swiss Web ”. The comparis.ch real estate app for Windows devices was awarded gold in the “Business” category at the “ Best of Swiss Apps Award ” in November 2013 .

At the beginning of 2013, company founder and CEO Richard Eisler announced that he would step down from his position in mid-2013 and join the board of directors. The company is now to be led by a dual leadership: Swiss manager Benno Burkhardt has been announced as the new CEO of comparis.ch. The previous Chairman of the Board of Directors, Johann Burkhard, took over the post of second CEO ad interim. In February 2014 Johann Burkhard resigned from the management and the board of directors, Paul Kummer became delegate of the board of directors . On October 1, 2019, Paul Kummer replaced Comparis founder Richard Eisler as Chairman of the Board of Directors. Comparis CEO Steven Neubauer subsequently moved up as Group CEO.

comparis.ch registered almost 60 million visits in 2013, making it one of the most popular Swiss websites.

Mobile apps

In recent times Comparis has drawn attention to itself with the implementation of innovative technologies , and services are increasingly being offered on mobile devices.

Smartshopper

In 2010, the free Smartshopper application for Apple iOS was launched in the Actions area , with the help of which one can create shopping lists manually or with a barcode scanner directly on the iPhone. Suitable promotions and special offers at retailers are then automatically displayed and the nearest branches can be located using a map function. Operation of the app was discontinued on December 31, 2016 and replaced by a new app "Price comparison Switzerland", which receives consistently poor ratings.

Real estate market

For the real estate market, there is an application for iOS that displays rental and purchase properties with the associated image and additional information directly on Google Maps .

Car market

Current offers on the vehicle market can be searched with the car market app.

Health insurance

The health insurance app compares current health insurance premiums.

Mortgages

A mortgage app has also been available since 2012 to find out about the latest interest rates.

In order to do justice to the increasing use of the Android operating system in Switzerland, since 2011 comparis.ch has made efforts to offer all Comparis apps on Android. By the end of 2012, the smart shopper, property market, car market, health insurance and mortgage apps could also be successively published for Android. The real estate market has also been available as a Windows 8 app since May 2013.

financing

The Comparis offer is largely free of charge for users. A nominal fee is charged in the mortgage exchange to ensure the seriousness of the requests. According to the company, the offer is financed through advertising, through the forwarding of clicks as well as through the recording and processing of requests for offers for the providers who want to use these services. The inclusion and the order of the providers in the Comparis comparison takes place regardless of whether they use the services of comparis.ch or not.

The latter form of financing has been criticized on various occasions because it is not compatible with an independent and neutral comparison service. Insurance companies themselves describe Comparis as a good sales channel. According to media reports, the comparison service pushed through higher fees for this brokerage service for insurance companies in 2007, whereupon the Swiss insurance group Zurich terminated its cooperation with Comparis.

In the area of health insurance , the Comparis business model has met with some criticism. According to industry information, Comparis receives between 40 and 50 francs per offer request from the health insurance companies . A move by Parliament to ban commissions and telephone advertising in the basic health insurance scheme failed on October 1, 2010 in the final vote of the National Council. However, comparis.ch made it clear in a media release that it is not affected by the commission ban: “Unlike brokers, comparis.ch does not receive any commissions, but maintains automated offer processes for the health insurance companies and is compensated for the use of this service regardless of the conclusion of the contract. “In addition, Comparis argues that the operation of these automated IT processes contributes to a significant increase in cost efficiency when changing health insurance companies. Calculations show that the health insurance companies can save up to 500 million Swiss francs in administrative costs simply by using the Comparis processes. Because a telephone inquiry and its processing cost the health insurers around 100 francs. In fact, according to the Federal Office of Public Health, the proportion of administrative costs for health insurance companies was 8.6 percent of the premium volume in 1996, over 50 percent higher than today with 5.6 percent.
