The Categoría Primera A 1959 was the twelfth edition of the Colombian football championship . Millonarios won the championship for the fifth time before Independiente Medellín . The top scorer was the Argentinean Felipe Marino from Independiente Medellín with 35 goals.

The number of participants rose from ten to twelve teams. Independiente Medellín returned after the alliance with Atlético Nacional last year, as did Unión Magdalena and Deportivo Cali . Atlético Manizales disappeared after just a year.

The champions qualified for the first time for an international tournament, the Copa Campeones de América 1960 , the first edition of the Copa Libertadores .

All teams played against each other four times.
