The Categoría Primera A 1964 was the seventeenth edition of the Colombian football championship . The championship was able to win for the ninth time overall and for the fourth time in a row Millonarios before Cúcuta Deportivo . As in the previous year, the Argentinian Omar Lorenzo Devanni from Unión Magdalena was the top scorer with 28 goals.

The same 13 teams took part as in the previous year.

All teams played against each other four times.

Split in Colombian football

Parallel to the existing association Asociación de Fútbol Colombiano (Adefutbol), a second, competing association was founded in 1964, the Federación Colombiana de Fútbol (Fedebol). This came about as a result of some clubs and leagues protesting against the financial policy of the existing association.

The championship could, however, be held regularly despite the split, as it was organized by the División Mayor del Fútbol Colombiano (DIMAYOR). Colombia was excluded from all international tournaments by FIFA . Because of this, the master was unable to take part in the 1965 Copa Libertadores .

The problem was solved in 1966 through intervention by FIFA. The Federación Colombiana de Fútbol was able to prevail, but with the official abbreviation Colfutbol.
