The Categoría Primera A 1949 was the second edition of the Colombian football championship . The championship was first decided in a final in which Millonarios was able to prevail against Deportivo Cali . The top scorer was the Argentine Pedro Cabillón from Millonarios with 42 goals.
The number of participants increased from ten to 14 teams. For the first time, Boca Juniors de Cali , Atlético Bucaramanga , Deportivo Pereira and Huracán from Medellín took part. Deportivo also represented Barranquilla Junior , who played an international tournament in Rio de Janeiro . 1949 was the only season in which Deportivo Barranquilla participated. The club played only 21 of the 26 games. The remaining games were rated 1: 0 for the opponent.
The 1949 season marked the beginning of the golden age of the Colombian football championship, known as El Dorado , when many top foreign players played in the league. In particular, Argentinians came because there was a strike in Argentina at the time. The Colombian league was the only one that accepted these players.
