The Categoría Primera A 1956 was the ninth edition of the Colombian football championship . The championship was able to win for the first and only time Deportes Quindío before Millonarios . The top scorer for the first time was a Colombian, Jaime Gutiérrez of Deportes Quindío with 21 goals.

The number of participants rose from ten to 13 teams. Deportivo Pereira , Atlético Bucaramanga and Unión Magdalena returned and Libertad from Barranquilla played his first and only season. Deportivo Cali was excluded from participation indefinitely and returned in 1959.
